Advanced Rooftop Unit Control (ARC) Retrofits

Research done by BPA shows that significant energy savings can be achieved by installing controls on HVAC equipment that lower supply-fan speeds during heating, ventilation, and air conditioning modes. Installation of such controls will qualify customers for PUD rebates, provided all other requirements are met.

Someone works on a rooftop air conditioning unit.

    Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for this program, the heat can be electric or gas, and the existing rooftop unit must meet the following criteria:

    • Have greater than 5 tons of cooling capacity
    • Be unitary equipment (no split systems)
    • Have constant speed supply fan (no variable speed fans)

There are two levels of ARC projects that can be done:

    ARC – Lite Retrofit

An ARC – Lite Retrofit must:

    Full ARC Retrofit

    A Full ARC Retrofit must:

    • Add a VFD and controller for variable speed fan operation or a multi-speed motor and controller for multi-speed fan operation to the existing RTU.
    • Include a controller with digital, integrated economizer control, and web-enabled control, monitoring, and alarms.
    • Use products on BPA's ARC Qualified Products List
    • Have the ARC Project Information Form filled out and submitted.

The rebate amount is determined by which type of retrofit is done and the number of hours the space is occupied per year.

ARC Retrofit TypeOccupied Hours Per YearRebate
    Full 2,000 - 4,000 $150/ton
    Full 4,001 - 8,760 $225/ton
    Lite 2,000 - 4,000 $100/ton
    Lite 4,001 - 8,760 $150/ton
